Need insulation? Think Earthwool Batts
In Australia we are spoiled for options when it comes to insulation brands to pick from. Knauf Earthwool is one of the most modern brands on the market, and is the only major insulation brand which is not manufactured locally. Earthwool is in fact made all over the world, and the Australian insulation is sourced directly from England. It looks and feels different to other brands, in fact many customers who are using this superb product for the first time can’t believe that it’s actually made from glasswool. Don’t take our word for it – drop by one of our warehouse facilities and check it out for yourself.
Knauf Insulation has invested heavily in new “ECOSE” technology to bring the itch factor which for decades has been synonymous with glasswool – to an unprecedented new low. Like many types of glasswool, Knauf Earthwool is manufactured using recycled glass bottles and has been ranked even more environmentally friendly than than real sheep’s wool, according to the U.K’s Green Guide for Specification. The product benefits from a unique binder which includes zero formaldehyde and is founded on renewable bio-based materials instead of old-fashioned petroleum-based chemicals.
Knauf Earthwool – Distinctive new Look and Feel
Earthwool insulation is a natural shade of earthy brown, and has no added dyes, bleaches or fake colours. Furthermore it is also less dusty and has a much softer and friendlier feel. As there is no formaldehyde or phenol used in the manufacturing process for Knauf Earthwool, it also improves the indoor air quality of buildings where these products are installed (compared to conventional glasswool products). One of the secrets behind the absence of itch, is the longer strands of insulation. The longer the strands, the fewer strands there are – and less strands of glasswool means fewer of those minute, protruding ends which is the cause of the well known ‘itch’ you may have experienced on the inside of your wrists when working with inferior brands of insulation.
Have you ever wondered how glass-fibre insulation is actually made? A mix of recycled glass, sand, and other ingredients is mixed together before being super-heated, turning it into a kind of molten glass. This is spun and flung around at very high speed, and at very high temperature, resulting in a consistency resembling ‘fairy floss’ candy. This is then transported along conveyor belts where the fluffy material is cut into the familiar rectangular ‘batt’ shape, before being compression packaged in bags, which are then further compressed into the combined packs or “MasterBags” as Knauf calls them. Don’t be fooled by the size of a bag of Knauf Earthwool – a single bag of R1.5/580mm will cover over 30m2 of wall area, which is almost double other brands of insulation. The super-compression factor does come with one warning – you’ll need to take extra care when carrying or transporting the bags, as an accidental slit along the bag will see the earthy coloured batts inside making their break for freedom, and you won’t get them back into the damaged bag without a struggle and lots of strong tape!
